How does bowling scoring work?

A game has 10 frames. You get two balls per frame to knock down 10 pins. An open frame scores the pins you knock down. A strike scores 10 plus your next two rolls. A spare scores 10 plus your next roll. The top score is 300, which takes 12 strikes in a row.

These rules come from USBC Playing Rules, Rule 2. The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) is the national governing body for ten pin bowling in the US.

How to use this scorecard

  1. Tap the number of pins you knocked down. Use X for a strike and / for a spare.
  2. Or tap the pins themselves on the pin rack, then press Record roll. Pins you already hit stay greyed out for your second ball.
  3. Or type a full game, such as X 7/ 9- X -8 8/ -6 X X X81, and press Score.
  4. Watch the running total in each frame and the max possible score on the right.

The scorecard blocks rolls that cannot happen. If 3 pins are standing, you cannot enter 5. Use Undo to fix a mistake. A keyboard works too: type digits, X, / and Backspace.

Strike, spare and open frame scoring

How each frame type is scored
Frame typeSymbolHow it is scored
Strike (all 10 pins on ball 1)X10 plus the next two rolls
Spare (all 10 pins after ball 2)/10 plus the next roll
Open frame (pins left standing)numbersPins knocked down in the frame
Miss (no pins on a ball)-0 for that ball

Two strikes in a row is a double. Three in a row is a turkey, and the first strike of a turkey is worth 30. USBC defines all of these in Rule 2c to 2g. You can also read the plain guide on Keeping Score at BOWL.com.

How is the 10th frame scored?

The 10th frame can have up to three balls. If you strike on the first ball, you get two more balls. If you spare with the first two balls, you get one more ball. If you leave pins standing after two balls, the game ends. The 10th frame score is just the pins from all of its balls.

Those extra balls are often called fill balls. They count only as bonus pins for the 10th frame. They do not start an 11th frame.

Why do bowlers track scores?

League bowlers use their scores to build an average. That average sets their handicap in a handicap league. See the bowling handicap calculator and the bowling average calculator. To keep score by hand at the lanes, print our free bowling score sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest score in bowling?

The highest score is 300. It is called a perfect game. You need 12 strikes in a row: one in each of the first nine frames and three in the 10th frame. Each frame is then worth 30 points.

What is a good bowling score?

It depends on your level. Many new bowlers score under 100. A score of 200 or more takes a lot of strikes and spares. The best way to judge your play is to track your bowling average over many games.

Why does my strike frame show no total yet?

A strike earns a bonus from your next two rolls. Until you throw them, the frame cannot be added up. The same is true for a spare, which waits for one more roll. The total fills in as soon as the bonus rolls are known.

What does max possible score mean?

It is the highest total you can still reach if every roll from now on knocks down every pin left standing. It starts at 300 and drops after each open frame or missed bonus. It shows what is still within reach.

How many rolls are in a game of bowling?

A game has between 11 and 21 rolls. A perfect game uses 12 rolls. A game with no strikes or spares uses 20. A game with a spare in every frame uses 21, because the 10th frame spare earns one fill ball.

Does this tool handle the 10th frame bonus balls?

Yes. If you strike or spare in the 10th frame, you get extra balls, up to three in total. The tool only allows rolls that are possible, so it blocks a second ball that would knock down more pins than are standing.

Can I share or save my game?

Yes. The page address updates with every roll. Tap Copy share link and send it to a friend. Your game is also kept in your browser, so it is still there if you close the page.
